Decisiones meets The Grudge in this somewhat silly tale of a curse stoked up by beyond-the-grave jealousy.Even at its most cheesy, Japanese horror can still be quite chilling. The trouble here is that Hideo Nakata has attempted to blend the modern Japanese horror he brought to the wider world's attention in The Ring, with a period ghost story grounded in a more traditional and conservative outlook. He's also had to stretch the narrative more than its underlying folk-moralistic message requires of itself.
