A significant first

As part of his inauguration, Álvaro Colom has become the first Guatemalan President to take an oath before the Consejo of Mayan elders (400 of them in fact - somehow I don't think Pérez Molina would have fancied those odds!)

This is, indeed, A Significant First. I was disillusioned (but not really surprised) when I read several comments about Colom when news of his victory over El General Tito first began streaming. Everything from "indio idiota" to "mano aguada" to "loca" and so on, and so on. There is a long road ahead, obviously, but this an indication that, at least for now, there is a chance for a new beginning. Finally in Guatemala, after so much rejection, there is a president that is publicly acknowledging 60% of the population.

I agree it's symbolically very important. And symbolism means a lot, as perhaps we'll see in the US soon.

Guy, do you have a source for more fotos from the ceremony? The one you posted is excellent.
